STEAM Program & Makerspace
Where Creativity Thrives & Confidence Soars
Students in grades 3 – 8 enjoy weekly STEAM classes. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Through the use of Westminster School’s Makerspace and integrative hands-on lessons and projects, students develop and use skills in analysis, problem solving and critical thinking. The Makerspace is a safe place to tinker, play, and learn how and why things work or do not work. Lessons and projects are designed to cover or integrate other curricular areas and are not based solely on one subject area. The STEAM program is separate from the Technology Program but encompasses some of the skills and knowledge acquired from the Technology Program.
In STEAM classes, students use the Engineering Design Process to work through challenges or to solve a problem. The overarching goal is to provide students various learning opportunities which reflect their interests while preparing them to be technologically literate, lifelong problem solvers. Examples of the content students are introduced to include computer usage and safety, word processing, the history of technology, Computer Aided Design (CAD), programming and coding, electronics, and design.
